    Pita Bread

Popular all around the middle east and especially Greece, pita bread is super easy to make can be used for almost anything.  From wraps and sandwiches to using for dips and spreads.  People even bake it in the oven to create crunchy and nutritious chips.  In Greece, besides being used for gyros, it is also served on the side to compliment most main dishes of chicken, lamb, beef, and falafel.

In some countries, pita bread is actually used in place of a fork or spoon.  People use the bread to grab onto the meat or vegetable they are eating.  It takes a little practice to eat bread this way!

Sift flour into mixing bowl. Add yeast sugar and salt. Roughly mix with a fork.

Add a little water and begin mixing using the dough hook on a mixer, or your child’s hands. Pour the water in slowly. Dough should begin to form a ball, as water is added. If dough is still crumbly, add additional water. If dough starts to become too sticky, add 1 teaspoon extra flour to make it firm. The consistency of the dough should be elastic without being too sticky.

Once the dough has reached desired consistency, cover with towel and let it sit in a warm area for 30-45 minutes. It should double in size.  When ready, take dough out of bowl and separate in to 2-inch balls. Use rolling pin or hands to stretch out dough until it is roughly 1cm thick.

Heat non-stick sauté pan to medium-high and fry each pita bread for 3-4 minutes on each side. The pan should not be greased. The bread should be light in color and fluffy when it is done.
